2023, let's go! There's a saying that a new year means 365 new opportunities. So enter the school science fair or try out for the talent show. Bring that story in your head to life, whether it's drawing a comic or making a movie. Learn how to bake cookies, ride a skateboard, or say hello in 10 different languages. Join an after school club at the library. Or discover new books you don't usually read by taking the TPL Reading Challenge!
If it's your first time participating, the rules are simple. Read 12 books in 12 categories. Keep track of your reading. At the end of the year, submit your list online for a chance to win a prize pack!
Here are the categories for the 2023 challenge:
- A book about friendship
- A book told from a child's point of view
- A book celebrating Black joy
- A book about sports
- A book written by an Indigenous author age 30 or younger
- A book about a land you would like to explore
- A book by a 2SLGBTQ+ author who is also part of another marginalized group
- A book about a person over age 65
- A book about survival
- A banned or challenged book
- A book by a person living with a non-apparent disability
- A book that makes you happy
Not sure what to read for some of the categories? We're here to help! We'll give recommendations throughout the year, so keep checking back. You can also ask your friendly neighbourhood librarian, or use NoveList, an online database of reading suggestions. Happy reading!
Finish the challenge? High five! Let a grown-up know if you want to receive a certificate, enter the prize draw, or both. You need to have a library card and to fill out this form. Congratulations on an amazing year of reading! We're giving everyone extra time to finish the challenge and enter the contest, so the new deadline is April 1, 2024.
