Why do we have belly buttons?

Did you know that your belly button is actually a scar? It's called the umbilicus, and it's the first scar that we get as babies. The belly button is a great way to prove that you're not a robot!

When they're still inside the pregnant person's body, the baby gets nutrients through a soft, bendable tube called the umbilical cord. All the vitamins and minerals a baby needs to grow big and strong travel through this cord, directly from the pregnant person. The cord also takes away the waste that the baby doesn't need anymore.

Once the baby is born, they no longer need to be connected by the umbilical cord. When the doctor cuts off the cord, a small stump is left behind. After a few weeks, the stump will fall off, and behold! A belly button. Every belly button is unique to each person. Is yours an innie or an outie?
