What do you wonder about as you're walking in a winter wonderland? A TPL Kids visitor wanted to know why some trees are bare and others full and green.
There are two ways that trees have evolved. Deciduous trees have broad and tender leaves which they shed during the winter. Maple trees are one example. Can you think of more deciduous trees?
Coniferous trees, such as pine trees, have needles instead of leaves. What are some other conifers you can name? Conifer needles survive through the winter because they are thin and long and waxy. Unlike leaves, needles don't lose a lot of moisture. This means that conifer needles stay green all year. They continue to nourish the tree through photosynthesis.
Conifer needles can last through several winters before they turn brown and fall off due to age. But don't worry, new needles sprout quickly to ensure the tree stays evergreen!
