Can we control our dreams?

Do you wish your dreams were more interesting? What if you could control what happens in them? It would be more exciting than counting sheep, that's for sure!

The process of controlling your dreams is called "lucid dreaming." There are different levels of lucid dreaming. Some people are simply aware they are asleep and dreaming. Others can control what happens in their dreams, like directing a movie!

Researchers have discovered a few interesting facts about lucid dreaming. About half of people have had a lucid dream in their lives, and it's easier for people who remember their dreams to access lucid dreaming.

Just like soccer, drawing or reading, you can get better at lucid dreaming with practice. There are a few techniques to make lucid dreaming easier. To help you remember your dreams, you can try dream journaling. This means writing down what you remember from your dreams after you wake up.

Sleep happens in stages, ranging from light sleep to deep sleep. Most lucid dreaming happens during REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. This is the deepest part of the sleep cycle. During REM sleep, a person's eyes move very fast, and brain activity is close to what it is when you're awake.
