Fall means apples and pumpkins, leaves turning red and gold, busy animals getting ready for hibernation and busy ghosts getting ready for haunting. Oh, and celebrating Canadian Library Month in October! We have some ideas for how to do that:
1. Enter our annual Design-a-Bookmark Contest. You can pick up your contest entry form at any open branch or bookmobile, or you can download and print it here. The deadline is October 30, 2021 at 5pm.
The contest has three age categories: 6 years old and under, 7 to 9 years old, and 10 to 13 years old. Every branch will have three winners, one from each age group. If you win at your local branch, you get a shiny new book prize. Then a panel of judges will look at all the branch winners from across the city. They will choose 12 Grand Award winners and four Elizabeth Cleaver Design Award winners. If you're one of these 16 winners, you'll win a book, 100 copies of your bookmark, plus an invitation to attend an award ceremony in February.
Imagine thousands of readers using bookmarks featuring your artwork! Could yours be one of the next winning designs? Good luck!
2. Play Escape the Library! Do you like solving puzzles and reading about magic and adventure? We challenge you to try this online escape room filled with aliens, dragons and giant spiders!
3. Read a book about a library. We made a list of stories celebrating the magic of libraries.
4. Come to an online program. Scary stories, space, Ripley's Aquarium and so much more! We'll show you how to weave, make a rubber band car and perform magic tricks. Tune in on our Crowdcast channel.
5. Get a library card if you don't already have one. One card, one million possibilities! Pros: it's free, kids don't have to pay overdue fines and you can borrow 75 things at once. Cons: we can't think of any.
