April Book Club: El Deafo

Are you 9 to 12 years old? Come join our online book club! Try a different book every month and discuss it with other readers. This month we're excited to chat about El Deafo by Cece Bell. Join us on April 22 or watch the replay!

Can a hearing aid give you superpowers? You bet! Cece wears a clunky Phonic Ear, which helps her warn the whole class when the teacher is coming back to the room. But all Cece wants is to fit in and find a true friend. Here are some questions to think about as you read this funny, realistic graphic novel:

  • Cece goes through a few rocky friendships, like Laura and even Ginny. Why doesn't she voice her discomfort? What helps her realize that's not what she's looking for?
  • How did the Phonic Ear make Cece feel throughout the book?
  • Why didn't Cece like going to sign class and what changed her views on signing?
